Marathi Cinema in 2017

Marathi Cinema is one of my point of interest, so decided to write something about our Marathi Film Industry. Being a Maharashtrian, I am always been a fan of Marathi Cinema. Having watched movies of Dada Kondke, Mahesh Kothare Lakshmikant Berde, Ashok Saraf Marathi Cinema for me was always about fun, humor & light action. However, over the years Marathi Cinema has evolved to a great extent

2017 Hits & Misses

Romantic Musical Marathi Cinema
Ti Sadhya kay karte

Coming back to the year 2017, There was a lot of quality stuff on display in Marathi Cinema but few & far between. The year started with ?Ti Saddhya Kay Karte? a light-hearted Romantic Musical which done well at Cinema Halls. ?However, after that, there was not much which would bring people to theaters. Movies like ?FU?, ?Fugay?, ?Bhikari?, ?Shentimental? generated some hopes but failed miserably at the Box Office

However, ?Chi Va Chi Sau Ka? & ?Muramba? were a pleasant surprise for Marathi Audience. Even though the story line was normal both movies did well in Theatres coz strong Acting & Direction. Other movies that made their presence felt were ?Boyz?, ?Hrudayantar? ?Baapjanma?, ?Dashakriya? to name a few.

Movies which made some noise but failed to deliver were ?Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar?, ?Nadi Vahate?, ?Halal?, ?Kaccha Limbu?, ?Mala Kahi Problem Nahi?, ?Tula Kalnnaar kadhi?, & ?Thank You Vitthala?

Kaasav?s Surprising Performance ?

The surprise package of the year 2017 was ?Kaasav? which brought home the prestigious ?Golden Lotus Award? at the 64th National Awards Ceremony. The movie got the award even before it was released. ‘Kaasav’, which stars?Irawati Harshe?and?Alok Rajwade, & directed by the talented duo of Sunil Sukthankar and?Sumitra Bhave won plenty of awards in various film festivals in India & abroad.

Golden Lotus Winner Marathi Cinema
Kaasav

A story about the forward-thinking Indian lady offering shelter of her beach house to a suicidal young man & helping him to get out of the depression of which even she is the victim went well with the juries. The issue of depression & environmental conservation has been brilliantly presented in the movie.

However, movie struggled to release as makers were unable to find the distributors. When the movie was eventually released in October there were not many people who came to Theatre to watch the movie. Poor promotion, especially on Social Media and lack of Interest among the audience for movies with some different subject, might be the reason.

Time to Experiment for Marathi Cinema

It?s high time for Marathi Cinema to get out of its comfort zone & try something new. ?Faster Fene? a Murder Mystery released on October 27 is doing exceedingly well in Cinema Halls. ?The main reason is that audience was treated to something different. Also acting of the leading stars Amey Wagh, Parna Pethe, Girish Kulkarni, Dilip Prabhavalkar was superb along with the direction by Aditya Sarpotdar. The movie was very well promoted which created good hype and as a result, the movie got a good opening.

So Marathi filmmakers can take a clue from this & try to focus more on creativity & promotion of the movies.? With such good actors at disposal & some brilliant directors, Marathi Cinema can give more to its audience than an occasional blockbuster. Also, it?s the duty of ?Marathi Manus? to give support to Marathi Cinema the same way they throng theatres for a Bollywood or Hollywood movies. ??????

  1. I thought Sairat would help Marathi cinema to transcend boundaries, but, so far things haven’t been good. Marathi cinema must be appealing to Marathi speakers outside Maharashtra. Every major regional cinema industry has carved a niche outside their home state. Marathi, Bengali and Kannada have something to learn from Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam in this aspect. If market expands, more money will flow and it will attract more talents.

    • Yeah, Sairat gave Marathi Cinema a nice opportunity to expand but sadly there was not much Post-Sairat that would appeal audience all over India. Firstly Marathi Cinema should try to make its roots strong all over Maharashtra. Bollywood having its base in Mumbai has for me been one of the major hurdles for Marathi Cinema. Let’s hope some new innovative stuff is dished out for audiences in the upcoming year.
